What is Laboring Under an Illusion about?
"Laboring Under An Illusion: Mass Media Childbirth vs. The Real Thing" is entertaining, engaging, & enlightening. 100 video clips of wildly entertaining birth scenes from movies & TV (in hospitals, bathtubs, cars, spaceships, and trees) juxtaposed with lots of REAL women giving birth. This award-winning documentary separates myths from facts, and it's lots of fun. We hope to reach a lot of women and couples in the community with this screening.
Why does this screening matter?
Movies and television play such a huge role in most peoples lives, and one of the ways in which they do this is by shaping our subconscious ideas about major life events: birth included! In this documentary, Anthropologist Vicki Elson explores these media-generated myths about childbirth. As a childbirth educator for nearly 30 years, she observed daily how our culture affects our birth experiences. In this film, she contrasts fiction with reality, debunking myths and false assumptions through the same medium that created them.
